A Smarter Way
to Commute for
Union County

ADD YOUR SUPPORT

43,000+ Union County residents commute to Mecklenburg daily.

That’s tens of thousands of neighbors spending hours on the road every weekday — time that could be spent with family, at work, or enjoying life in our community.

Many face long delays on Providence Rd and Independence Blvd.

These main routes funnel nearly all east-side traffic toward Charlotte. Bottlenecks, stoplights, and accidents can add 30–60 minutes to each trip.

Forbes ranked Charlotte the #2 hardest commute in the U.S.

Only one city in America scored worse. The ranking reflects long average drive times, limited transit options, and heavy congestion — all issues our county feels daily.

Introducing Hybrid Certification

WalkSafe Monroe is proposing a first-of-its-kind hybrid certification program for local employers. The program would be overseen by the county or a recognized local authority, which would ensuring credibility and measurable results. The idea is that employers who meet clear standards for flexible work policies would earn certification and potential incentives, helping reduce congestion and give families more time back.

Success in Union County would serve as a blueprint for the Charlotte region. The pilot would show how flexible work policies can work locally, and expanding these policies in Charlotte could dramatically reduce commuter congestion and improve daily life.

Better for Workers
& Families

Fewer cars on the road mean shorter, less stressful commutes and safer streets for everyone — whether you’re driving, biking, or walking. Parents gain back precious time with kids, caregivers have more flexibility, and the whole community benefits from less traffic, cleaner air, and better quality of life.

Stronger Local Economy

When businesses embrace flexible and hybrid work, they can attract and keep top talent, reduce turnover, and support a healthier, more productive workforce. Less time stuck in traffic also means more dollars spent locally — and as Union County builds a reputation for forward-thinking work policies, we open the door to new investment, entrepreneurship, and true economic mobility for residents.
