Charles Street (SR 2188) has seen an alarming 56 accidents since 2020 on its short .58-mile stretch, including two incidents with vehicles speeding at 100 mph and another at 90 mph. This dangerous trend poses serious risks to our community, putting families and pedestrians in harm's way—especially considering the street’s 25 mph residential speed limit. That’s 56 accidents in 57 months on a road that barely measures half a mile long. Additionally, while Charles Street has a speed limit of 25mph, a recent speed study conducted showed that an average of 85% of drivers speed down Charles Street daily, with 15% of those speeders going at least 39 mph. Charles Street is maintained by the state, however surrounding streets managed by the City of Monroe have successfully implemented speed cushions to reduce speeds.
